Paris hospital ... and Christmas is coming

Text: Elena Olkhovskaya

It is human nature to believe in miracles. Especially on Christmas Eve. It is human nature to believe in love, even if there is war, sorrow and tears around him. It is human nature to laugh when it's hard, and cry from overwhelming happiness ...

The performance of the Hospital Moulin Rouge based on the play by Dani Laurent, presented in Dubai by the Independent Theater Project companies Elshan Mammadov, Stars Dome Group and Al Khalidiah Tourism, takes place in France, during the First World War on two Christmas days. Hospital nurses performed by Lyudmila Artemyeva, Olesya Zheleznyak and Alina Sergeeva, knocking down from fatigue, take care of the wounded, complain about their own fates, enjoy good news from the front and believe in the best. One of their patients, a wounded count's son, will undergo leg amputation surgery. His heartbroken, but strong mother, performed by Tatyana Dogileva, and demented brother Pierre, performed by George Dronov, constantly come to the hospital to inquire about the patient’s condition, take part in general discussions on a variety of topics, and help nurse Margarita in the time of the operation and, in the end, to celebrate Christmas. ... With a simple meal of nurses and delicacies that the countess will bring, with gifts to each other and endless exclamations: "This is for me? Why! It was not necessary!", cursing and clarifying the relationship, with with tears, with the news of the bridegroom of the youngest of the nurses who was killed at the front, which everyone except the bride learned about ... And, as always, with the belief that all this nightmare will end soon, and a bright and kind tomorrow will come ...

But even before everything that happened on stage for two whole hours immersed the audience in the French winter of 1917, we seized the moment and talked a bit with the acting troupe.

Tatyana Dogileva - People's Artist of Russia

... I was terribly surprised when I found out that we were going on a tour to Dubai, because the two concepts of "Russian theater" and "Dubai" somehow did not fit in my head. Although I have already been here several times on vacation with my daughter and even met several Russians who told me about their life in the UAE, but for the theater ... I could not even think of such a thing. And when I heard that our actors flew to the Emirates with other performances, at first I even laughed. But they managed to pave our way. After all, our performance is, in general, not quite a comedy. This all the more does honor to the inviting party, which, apparently, is trying to accustom the local audience not only to pure entertainment, but also wants to instill in it a taste for different types of theatrical art. It is very interesting and honorable. I want to say thank you very much for the warm welcome we are given here and for the way we are treated. Because I was recently on tour in America, and this is “heaven and earth”, and “heaven” is the Emirates.

... It is a mistake to think that we are playing French women in the play "Moulin Rouge Hospital". We play people, their relationships, history. We just act in the circumstances. And grief, happiness, joy - they are international ...

... I honestly say that the tragedy is more difficult to play, because the audience is more drawn to something funny. And when at least some funny text sounds in the play, they immediately connect. And if it is a drama or tragedy, then from the side of the hall even a little resistance is felt, because each person has enough of his troubles. Tragedy must be played very well to captivate the viewer, and this is the hardest thing .... It is very difficult in the course of the play to pass from tears to laughter and from joy again to tears. I declare with all responsibility that the profession of an actor is very difficult. Life in general is very difficult. Especially for those actors who are not in demand today. And our whole profession lays its mark on health ...

... If we talk about cinema, then there is a big difference between Soviet and modern cinema. Earlier, in Soviet times, when shooting a film, the conversation was about art, but now more and more about rating, rental and box office. Today it’s not even accepted on television to say “film,” everyone says “product.” That's the movie and are treated like a product. Now the director is just a terrible technical position, because the producer says what and how to shoot. The scripts are mostly monotonous, tailored by Hollywood standards. And if we manage to survive this time in some way, then maybe something will work out. While I personally am horrified, watching where all this is heading for and how the tastes of the audience spoil, which cease to understand “what is good and what is bad.” ... I regard our visit to Dubai as a gift. In Moscow, the last two months there is no sun at all. As if someone turned it off. For example, I was waiting for a trip here to recharge with solar energy. And she also received, besides everything, the incredible hospitality of the organizers of the tour and the local audience.

Lyudmila Artemyeva - Honored Artist of Russia

... How harmoniously did we fit into the plot of the French play? It’s rather difficult for us to judge, we have a different profession. Even sitting like this in the auditorium, as we are doing now, is also an unusual situation for us. Our business is there, on stage. Prove something or not. Be convincing. As for the "truthfulness" of our presentation of this play, Dani Laurent herself came to the premiere in Moscow, in a terrible frost. She was struck, firstly, by frost, and secondly, by the fact that, despite the frost, there was a full audience hall. And somewhere in the middle of the play she refused the translator. She listened to the breath of the hall, she looked at his reaction. Her enthusiastic emotions give us the right to hope that in our performance we were able to convey the spirit of a military hospital and France. Magnificent costumes created by the artist Victoria Sevryukova, as well as wonderful scenery, played a large role here. A variety of wonderful people gathered this picture together, and we hope that it turned out to be convincing. But it’s better to ask the audience ...

... The life of an actor, if he is in demand, often offers some incredible gifts. For example, I discovered the concept of "debutant." In my acting career there were many directors who practically had nothing to do with this profession, but I learned to define them for myself and not continue communication. But there are real discoveries. I once worked with Ilya Khotinenko, the son of Khotinenko Sr. And suddenly, on the set, I got into such an assembled team that did its job with such love. They lined up the frame for two hours, and no one said anything, because everyone understood that it would be an incredible frame. By such people it is clear that they are engaged in creativity. And even if they are young, but when an actor is invited to them, even for a small role, this is happiness ...

... I enjoy playing in this performance of the Independent Theater Project. It seems to me that Elshan Mammadov has an amazing instinct and producer's gift. He goes for plays to various countries of the world. He is passionate and curious, and this is such a rarity in our time. After all, still try to work with us, try to bring us all together, so obstinate. He manages to collect wonderful acting ensembles in each production with his intellect, tact, erudition. And we ourselves, like schoolchildren, are happy to run to watch those performances in which we are not involved. I really enjoyed visiting the premiere of "Daddy". And I was surprised at myself, because if you look like this, it’s quite problematic to drive me into the theater as a spectator with my busyness. And then no one drove, she ran herself, and they didn’t let her in at first, they said that this was still a draft version of the play ...

... Do we like in the Emirates? Highly. Our bodies and souls, accustomed to loads, flights, constant tours, are so grateful that a few hours of sun, warmth, hospitality and love are enough for us to be in shape again and give our mood to people. Although until the last moment I was afraid that they would come and say: “Sorry, it didn’t work out.” ... I like the multinationality of the Emirates, their color is unique. I like to look at people's faces, look for some types. I'm very interested. We are like birds, from here we will fly on the next tour and we will absorb other emotions that permeate the globe.

Georgy Dronov - theater and film actor

... How well do I feel in such a beautiful ladies environment? Excellent! I am the only man in the play, therefore I am surrounded by the care and attention of all my partners. I practically “skate like cheese in butter.” ... This is our first trip abroad with this particular performance. We thought that we would first show it in France. But it so happened that we toured with the Moulin Rouge Hospital in Ukraine, and now we have arrived in Dubai.

... I want to supplement Tatyana and say that the profession of an actor, despite all her difficulties and ups and downs, is nevertheless very beloved, however. Because it is a profession that gives a huge number of meetings and communication. What other profession can give such an opportunity as a trip to warm and sunny Dubai in the middle of a cold and snowy winter, and not just a trip, but a job that allows you to combine business with pleasure. I think that we all, of course, get tired, but we get much more from our craft than we spend on it. In addition, this is the second time I have arrived in Dubai. And I myself am interested, because here, being away from the homeland, from their linguistic environment, people go to the theater. And for some reason it seems to me that today I will see a completely different hall than it was at our first performance.

After all, our premiere was akin to a miracle for many here, as if snowdrops had blossomed in the middle of winter, and Russian actors arrived. And now, just right, something right will happen in the hall ...

Olesya Zheleznyak - theater and film actress

... Not a jinx ... A performance is always a mystery. Starting to play, we never know whether it will develop or not. For example, it’s always strange for me to talk about which of my roles is the best. When I play a role, I like it, and the next one, about which I do not know yet, is likely to be even better, and behind it is generally the most entertaining ...

... It is a pity that prominent actors have recently passed away. Although they usually say that there are no irreplaceable people, but when such powerful and talented personalities leave, it can be very painful.

... There are many directors who are interesting and want to work with. Take, for example, the director of this our play, Viktor Shamirov. I would love to do some new work with him. He, in my opinion, is very interesting, and is capable of producing completely different stories - comedies, subtle dramas, and human tragedies ...

... I think it's great that we ended up in Dubai. We here all day before the performance rested, swam in the sea, ate endlessly. Arriving in the Emirates for the first time, I really want to come back here with the children.

Alina Sergeeva - actress

... I like all my roles, because so little has been played. I feel good and comfortable as part of this stellar troupe. And I am pleased that I ended up here in the Emirates, and today I will play on this stage with beautiful scenery ...

... The hall froze. Two actions, fit in two hours, flashed in one breath. And together with them a not so distant story flew before the eyes of our contemporaries, which once connected all the people of the world with the bitterness of losses, and the joy of victories, and the ability to sympathize, and the desire to arrange for themselves at least small, but holidays.

We, the audience, once again have to thank the organizers of the tour of the "Independent Theater Project" in Dubai for the unexpected joy of meeting with a living, native and such an understandable art called "theater".
